Donald G. Slater, 84, of Martinsville, Illinois passed away April 1, 2019 at the Gibson Family Hospice Center. He was born in Martinsville, Illinois to Russell Slater and Catherine Hall Slater on September 28, 1934. Don was a 53 year member of the Brothers of the Woods, 32nd degree Mason of the Martinsville Masonic Lodge since 1965 and was an active member of 4-H since age nine participating in the 4-H Fair and sheep department. He remained active and interested in 4-H and one year sponsored a young member with sheep showing and blocking.
He was an avid hunter, both bow and gun. One of his greatest hobbies was wood carving. Don and his wife Rose traveled around the world with his occupation living in Jamaica, Africa, South America and traveling widely in Europe.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Rosa Marcella Smock, brother Robert L. Slater, nephew Donald Smock, niece Margaret Smock, nephew Eric Hemminghouse, and nephew- in- law William Coons. Don is survived by his wife Rose Marie Hemminghouse Slater, nieces; Elizabeth Ann Coons, Julie Machango, ,Polly Hemminghouse Jeffers (Jimmie), Anna Neukum (Alan), nephews; Kim Andrew Machago, Michael Stanley Machango (Tammie), John Edward Hemminghouse (Terri), Burke James Hemminghouse (Dete), Michael Leo Hemminhouse, and Robert Smock. He is also survived by many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
