Doris McAllister Obituary

Doris M. McAllister of Terre Haute, Ind., died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2018. She was born in Riley, Ind. on Oct. 23, 1925 to Macey and Edith (Romas) Bratt.

She married Neil McAllister on July 6, 1947. He preceded her in death in 1974. Following her work as an optical technician, she became a teacher and retired after 26 years from Fayette Elementary School, New Goshen, Ind. in 1988. She immediately returned to Fayette to volunteer in and eventually manage the publishing center, providing countless families with a cherished book written and illustrated by their child. She also volunteered in the Ribbit Store at West Vigo Elementary, where children could make purchases with credits they earned from attendance.

Doris is survived by her loving family, which includes her daughter Jean Anne Marra, her husband Sam, and their daughter Jessica Anne, in Statham, Ga.; her daughter Marsha McAllister and her husband Dave Haddox, in Anna Maria, Fla; her sister Joy Marlene Power, her brother Darrell Macey Bratt and his wife Nancy (Loving) Bratt, all in Terre Haute; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and their children. She was preceded in death by her sister June Maurine Jeffers from Seeleyville, Ind. and their brother Dale Morton Bratt.

Doris was an active member of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers’ Sorority. She loved quilting, knitting, reading, Native American history & culture, and space exploration. She was a devoted fan of ISU basketball–upon her retirement, Larry Bird signed a poster for her. She enjoyed teaching children in Sunday School at the Maple Avenue United Methodist Church. She had several Omer Seamon prints, including one she commissioned of the farm house from her youth in Riley. She collected glass salt cellars and almost anything depicting a bunny. It was no surprise to those who knew her when she received the October 2011 Lifetime Make A Difference Award while at West Vigo to the cheers of the entire student body.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018 at Samaritan Funeral Home at 2425 Wabash Ave. in Terre Haute. A second visitation, beginning at 10 a.m., will precede the funeral service celebrating Doris’ life which will begin at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, at Maple Avenue United Methodist Church, 1203 Maple Avenue, Terre Haute, Ind. 47804. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park in Terre Haute.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Maple Avenue United Methodist Church where she was a member for over six decades.
