Learned only today of Steve's passing.  Met him at KU in '67 and was delighted to know him throughout his KU days and beyond.  What a sparkling and mischievous mind.  Learned all my advanced topology from him, namely that a hairy sphere has two whorls!  Rest in peace, my dear old friend.

Dear Karen

Judy and I were so sorry to hear that Steve passed away. I enjoyed working with Steve and he is one of the colleagues in the Rose Math department that I have known the longest. I was especially appreciative of his work with the MAA, and how he helped me get involved in the Indiana MAA.  Please give my condolences to your family, especially Alex who I got to know a little over the years.

Kay and I mourn his passing
With deep sorrow and sympathy to you, Karen and to the rest of Steve’s family:
I will always cherish my memories of Steve, who was my closest associate and friend during my years at Rose-Hulman. It was Steve and Roger, who helped me create our Young Scholars program; it was mainly the two of them and John Rickert, who helped me sustain its associated Talent Search, which is now in its 30th year. Steve was there even to chair the Mathematics Department when I was away. He was an excellent teacher and superb mentor not only for the students at Rose-Hulman, but also nationwide via our programs. He will be missed by all of us;

My sincere condolences to Karen and the Carlson Family.  I briefly worked with Steve as the Administrative Assistant in the Math Dept. at Rose-Hulman.  He always had a warm greeting and smile on his face.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.
