Charles Hawkins, Sr., the son of the late Carl and Annie Hawkins was born October 25, 1952, in Mt. Vernon, Indiana.  He departed from this life on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Harrison Crossing Health Care.

Charles grew up and was raised in the Church of God and Christ in Mt. Vernon, Indiana.  He served in the United States Army and played in a band at an early age.  He loved coaching basketball and football.  He also enjoyed fishing.

Charles retired from Indiana State University.  He was a firm believer that there was always work to be done.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, as well as Carl Givens, Sr., Barbara Washington, Debbie Hargett, and George Hawkins.  He leaves to cherish his loving memory his wife Mary, one daughter Barbara Brewer (James), two sons Charles Hawkins, Jr. and Christopher Owens, four sisters Mary Cason, Elizabeth Lee, Sarah Clark, Robin Spanner, and one brother Robert Hawkins, Sr., eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, brothers in law and sisters in law, two special nieces Angela Bates and Bambi Givens, one God son Marco Givens and two special friends Marcella Norton and Beth Reid.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Convention Center located at 800 Wabash Avenue on Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 2:00 p.m.  The family would like to extend a special thanks to the nurses and staff at Harrison Crossing and the VNA.
