Obituary

Edward L. Sebring, known affectionately as "Big Ed" for his big heart and voice, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2023. He was surrounded by the love of his life, companion and soulmate Cindy Rider, and their cherished family. He is survived by his stepchildren, Brian Rider (Lisa) and Christie Spalla (Dave), whom he loved dearly and treated as his own, as well as his grandchildren who brought immeasurable happiness to his life. His beloved cat Kallie held a special place in his heart, providing comfort and companionship during quiet moments. He is also survived by his former wife, Jo Ellen Keller (Earle) and was proceeded in death by their son Charles "Chuck" Stodghill Sebring, whom we are confident greeted him with "Hey old man, what took ya so long?" and a hilarious rendition of "The Spanish Inquisition."

Born on September 25, 1946 in Vincennes, Indiana, to Paul F. and Louise Lorentz Sebring, Ed's life was a testament to kindness, faith, dedication, and service to his community. He was proud to have attended The  Ohio State University, earning a bachelor's degree in Ancient History as well as an MBA, and nurturing a lifelong love for the Buckeyes. Ed found fulfillment and purpose in serving as a lay pastor for many Presbyterian congregations over the years. His favorite message was "God's in charge; we ain't!"

Ed's family extended beyond his immediate kin, as he was an esteemed member of Freemasonry for 55 years, and a DeMolay for 60 years. He fully embraced the principles of brotherhood, charity, and integrity, serving in many leadership roles in Masonry, church, and the Boy Scouts. If you needed something done, Ed was your man.

With pen in hand and a heart full of stories, Ed made his mark as an award winning writer for the Vincennes Sun-Commercial newspaper. His words captured the essence of local events and offered uplifting stories and insights that inspired the community.

A memorial service to celebrate Ed's life will be held at the Vincennes #1 Masonic Lodge on Saturday, Sept. 2, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family kindly requests donations to be made in his honor to the Vincennes #1 Lodge F&AM, 501 Broadway, Vincennes, IN 47591; the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 400 8th Ave., Terre Haute, IN 47804; or the Masonic or community service organization of your choice.

Farewell, Big Ed. You will forever be remembered for your warmth, wisdom, and kind spirit. May you rest in eternal peace, knowing that your presence and loving legacy will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives you touched. Bravo!
