Floyd Spencer Smith, known by many as “Grandpa”, was 89 years old when he passed away on August 1, 2026, at 7:17 p.m. He was born as a twin on November 10, 1936, in Terre Haute, Indiana to Carl Jefferson Smith and Jemima Victoria Stewart Smith. He was a Christian and Deacon at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church attending faithfully with his wife, Jeanette, and family for several years. He married Jeanette Phillips Smith (JP) on August 11, 1961 and they spent 65 years together.
Floyd played football during his youth, later coaching little league baseball and basketball in the Terre Haute Community. He loved his family so much. He took pride in giving every child in the family a nickname.
Floyd served in the United States Air Force from 1956-1960. He worked at Pfizer for 33 years. Floyd retired on the 3rd month of the year on the 3rd day at 8:03 in the morning after working 3 hours that day in 2003. In 1975, one of his greatest accomplishments was completing his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education at Indiana State University, with his wife Jeanette receiving her bachelor’s degree in education, all while raising five children. Floyd was very proud they graduated in the same year as their daughter Natalie who was starting ISU in the fall. Eventually, Floyd and Jeanette pursued their master’s degrees at ISU.
Floyd is preceded in death by his parents, Carl Jefferson Smith and Jemima Victoria Stewart Smith, daughter Ethel Lee, siblings Vernon Edward Smith, Mary Edith Smith Nolan-Taylor (Henry Lee), Leola Marlen Smith McCormick, and his twin Lloyd Smith.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory, beloved wife Jeanette (JP) Smith, sister-in law Montrell Smith; children Natalie, Alisa (James), Sonya, Lance (Michelle), Spencer (Misty); grandchildren Bryan (Lauren), Monique (James), Michael, Shaun, Riliegh (Terry), Travon (Kailoni), Autoria, Sydni, and Kennedy, 18 great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews and extended family.
Visitation will be held Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Saints Home Church from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. with service beginning promptly at 1:00 p.m. at the church at. Burial will follow at Stewart Lawn Cemetery.
