Obituary

John H. Dowell passed away at home on April 9, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was born on October 3, 1960, in Clinton, Indiana. John was raised in Shepardsville and later resided in St. Bernice.


John was preceded in death by his father, William E. Dowell, and his lifelong companion, Rhonda Nightingale. John is survived by his mother, Judith D. Dowell; his children, Vicky Nightingale Carlson (Josh) and Jennifer Thornton (Thomas); his sister, Debbie Dowell Thomas; and a very special grandson, Quentin Silotto, who was always there when he was needed. He is also survived by two special nieces, grandchildren Erin Shannon (Breydon), Zack Silotto, and Gracey Carlson (Blake); and great-grandchildren, and many dear friends who meant a great deal to him.


John was one of the original members of The Country Music Makers, where he played bass for over 20 years. John was a West Vigo graduate, class of 1979. He was also an active member of the St. Bernice Legion Post 108 and a lifetime member of Thousand Trails Campground. John retired from Laborers Union Local 204.


John had a passion for racing with his cousin and enjoyed working on cars. He was the owner of the original "Under Dog" car. In his free time, he loved hunting, fishing, and playing pool in his garage with friends. John had a heart of gold and never stopped helping others.


His mother, sister, and family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to VNA Hospice of the Wabash Valley for their care and support during this difficult time.


Per his request, John will be cremated. There will be no funeral visitation. A graveside service will be held at a later date.
