Joy J. Shewmake, 80, of Terre Haute and formerly of Texas passed away on Friday, July 31, 2020 at her residence surrounded by family. She was born May 8, 1940 in Salesville, Texas to Willie Harold Garvin and Lily Lucile (Hopkins) Garvin. Joy's family were hardworking sharecroppers. This work ethic was instilled in Joy and her husband, Metha whom she married December 1, 1961. In 1978 they opened and operated their own medical billing business which they ran until 2011. Joy enjoyed gardening, reading, collecting antiques, and going to garage sales. Most of all she loved to spend time with her family. She loved Texas and as the old saying goes, you can take the lady out of Texas but you can't take Texas out of the lady. Joy is survived by her daughter Mitzi Shield (Jeff), sons Metha Shewmake, Jr. (Leane) and Bobby Charles Shewmake (Sue), grandchildren Devin Shield (Mackenzie), Jo-Elyn Shield (Sean), Alexander Shield (Hailey), Austin Donald Shewmake, Justin Metha Shewmake, Bobby Charles Shewmake, Jr., Elizabeth Joy Fagg (Kevin), Tiffany June Shewmake, and Thomas Landry Shewmake, great-grandchildren Tyler Shield, Brycen Hrovat, Aubree Shield, Roxanne Ferguson, Charlie Ferguson, Nathan Fagg, Ethan Fagg, Greysan Fagg, Lincoln Fagg, Colton Fagg, and Hudson Fagg; sisters Mary Alice Brooks (Larry) and Billie Lucille Holder (Al), brother in law Charles Shewmake (Betty), sisters in law Marjorie Garvin, Sheila Guckian (Bill), and Patricia Shewmake ,several cousins, nieces and nephews and her beloved pet Nikki. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 48 years, Metha Shewmake, brother Curtis Garvin, brother in law Bobby Shewmake and sister in law June Croushorn and her husband George. Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Samaritan Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
