Mary Ann Tumey, 80, passed away peacefully at her home on January 23, 2025. She was born on July 17, 1944, in Roanoke Rapids, NC, to Ralph and Ethel (Mosley) Byrd.
Mary Ann had a varied career, but it was her role as the manager of the family restaurant, The White Barn, where she truly flourished. Her dedication, warmth, and leadership made her a beloved figure among all who had the privilege of working with her. Her kindness and genuine care for others left a lasting impact on everyone she met.
Mary Ann also had a deep love for nature, particularly her garden. She was an avid gardener and birdwatcher, with hummingbirds being her favorite. She took great joy in cultivating her plants and flowers, nurturing them with the same love and attention she gave to everything in her life. Additionally, she was known for her wonderful cooking and hosting memorable family dinners over the years, always surrounded by those she loved. Family meant everything to Mary Ann, and her devotion to them was evident in all that she did.
She is survived by her son, Edward "Egie" Tumey; daughters, Kimberly (Hervey) Willis, Kelli Finney Grady, Kylei Tumey, Taylor (Shawn) Hammons, and McKayla (Aaron) Gary; grandchildren, Brittany (Phillip) Spencer, Julie Willis, Dawson Willis, and Mark (Elizabeth) Milam; great-grandchildren, Xavier Higgs, Naomi Spencer, Jayden Hammons Stout, Ayden Grady, Mia Gary, and Benjamin Gary; her brother, Milton (Louise) Byrd; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward (Jerry) Tumey; both of her parents; her in-laws, Katherine and Ed Tumey; and her siblings, Robert Byrd and Francis Tarr.
A celebration of her life will be held on February 8, 2025, at the Marshall Church of Christ, located at 809 N. Second St., Marshall, IL, from 1-3pm.
