Mary Lou Newman, age 84 of Terre Haute, went to be with our Lord and Savior on February 6, 2022. She was born in Terre Haute, IN on August 13, 1937, to Thelma Martin Morrison and Fred Morrison. Mary Lou was a member of the Eighth Avenue Baptist Church. She is survived by one son, Jeffrey Scully, and two daughters, Jeanine Utterback (husband David), and JoAnna Gonzales (husband Ray). Also surviving are five grandchildren; Caleb Utterback (wife Brooke), Eliot Utterback (wife Stephanie), Lucy Utterback, Caitlin Scully Head (husband Alec), RaeAnna Gonzales; and three great-grandchildren, Emelynn and Harrison Utterback, and Josie Utterback as well as Cousin Don Lowder, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Jack Morrison, niece Margaret Morrison Mason, niece Julie Morrison Kelly, and great-nephew Luke Kelly. Mary Lou was married to Stanley Scully for 38 years, and then married to Allen Newman. Both proceeded her in death.
Mary Lou graduated from Garfield High School in 1955 and was a top tennis competitor. She was also a Job's Daughters Queen in 1953. Mary Lou was known for her cooking expertise and her Christmas Eve Open Houses. After she retired from the Kroger Deli Department; she then opened her own catering business for ten years. Mary Lou was known to have a servant's heart. She cooked meals every Wednesday for the Light House Mission during the 1970's and 1980's. Mary Lou taught children's Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School for over forty years at North Terre Haute First Baptist Church and Eighth Avenue Baptist Church. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and cooking dinners at the church for special occasions. She was president of the Fair Garden Club for many years and enjoyed competing with her prize-winning garden roses. One of Mary Lou's passions was playing golf. She was treasurer/secretary for several years of the Terre Haute Newcomers Nine-Hole Golf League and competed in the city golf tournaments. Her love for God, family, and friends is her lasting legacy. Those who were blessed to have known Mary Lou, knew that you could never have asked for a more loving Mom, Mamaw, Aunt, and friend. A Celebration of Life will be coming at a future date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation can be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.
