Norma Lloy Plascak, 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 28th, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. Survivors include her son, Marty (Brenda) Plascak; daughters Patti (Richard) Willey and Pam Plascak; brothers, Donald (Linda) Green and Steve Green; six grandchildren, five great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, friends and fur babies.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband, Martin Plascak; father, Kenneth A. Green; mother, Lucille M. (Wilkinson) Green; brother, Kenneth E. Green.

Born on August 19, 1935, in Terre Haute, Indiana to Kenneth A. Green and Lucille M. (Wilkinson) Green, Norma learned many of her great life passions during her childhood. On the family farm, she wished the farm animals could be her pets. Her parents instilled her with a love of gardening. She grew up harvesting and canning many foods. As an adult she was famous for her green thumb, African violets and orchids were her favorites. Norma could bring even the most wilted plant back to life. Her mother also fostered her love of all the fabrics arts; sewing, crocheting, quilting and knitting. She especially loved counted cross stitching and created hundreds of Christmas ornaments for family and friends who will cherish them forever. Her energy and talent led her to create quilts and blankets for the Maternal Health Clinic. Many children rested comfortably in a Norma Plascak creation.

Norma graduated from Honey Creek High School in 1953 before attending St. Anthony’s Hospital School of Nursing. There, she made lifelong friends with her three roommates and discovered yet another life passion: nursing. She graduated in 1956 and then worked as the Head Nurse of the Department of Surgery for several years. The relationships she formed during her years as a nurse were to be a giant part of her life even after retirement; she attended lunches with her friends from the St. Anthony Alumni and the Nightingales Club right up until the end.

Norma married her true love, Martin, on May 1, 1960. They had more than 61 years of a beautiful marriage together. Norma loved being a mother and left nursing after the birth of her son to be a full-time mom. When her youngest daughter graduated from high school, she returned to college to refresh her skills and then returned to Union Hospital. She worked mostly in Urology until she retired in 2002.

She didn’t stop caring for others after retirement. With her newly found free time, Norma cared for her ever-growing family. She was also heavily invested in her friend’s families and loved ones. She was always over-the-moon delighted to embrace each new grandchild or great-grandchild. She especially cherished the five-generation photo of her with her son, granddaughter, great-grandson and great-great grandson!

In addition to their love of family, Norma and Martin shared a great passion for Big Ten Basketball. Family and friends were always welcome to phone – but not when IU or Purdue were playing! They also loved all wildlife. Norma and Martin would often picnic in the woods behind their home to observe the deer, birds and other creatures. As a self-taught birder, she changed migratory patterns of many species of birds by providing the food and shelter that they needed. Cardinals were her absolute favorite.

It is also rumored that all the stray cats would send their kittens to her back door because they knew she welcomed them joyously.

Good Samaritan was entrusted with the arrangements. The service will be held on Tuesday, August 4th at Central Christian Church located at 4950 Wabash Avenue with the Reverend Rebecca Zelensky officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00-1:00 p.m. with the service following at 1:00 p.m. A meal will be provided by the church immediately following her burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to Central Christian Church or to the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care.
