Obituary

Thomas J Rogers was born June 8, 1927 to Thomas V. and Ruth Rogers. He was born and spent his early
years in Paris, IL. His family then moved to Brazil, Indiana, where he completed high school at Fontanet.
Tom served in the US Navy, where he was stationed in Hawaii during WWII. He graduated from Indiana
State Teachers College in 1951 and taught math from 1952 through 1987 at Fontanet High School
(where he also coached basketball), Glenn Jr. & Sr. High School, and Terre Haute North High School. He
was loved by many family, friends, and students (and disliked by some students who were not
interested in learning math). As his granddaughter, I distinctly remember never being able to walk
around any part of Terre Haute, Brazil, Fontanet, or other surrounding areas with Grandpa without
regularly being stopped by someone whose life he had touched. Tom was a member of the Riley Lodge
of the Indiana Freemasons for 62 years. He enjoyed boating, waterskiing, fishing, going out to dinner,
sports, gambling boats, working on his family farm, playing cards with family and friends, and making up
stories during road trips leaving his granddaughters with spotty accuracy in her understanding of
American history. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Beverly McKee Rogers; brother, Charles
Rogers; and his parents, Thomas V and Ruth Hugg Rogers. He is survived by his daughter and her
husband, Cindy Samm Miller and Jim Miller; his granddaughters Tracee Miller and Carrie Bastian and
their spouses; his great-grandchildren, Aubree and Rory Bastian; and by his nephew and niece, Mike
Rogers and Marla Sue Kleewin. There will be a private family ceremony, and celebration of life to be
scheduled when gatherings are deemed safe by the CDC. Please send any donations to Hospice of the
Wabash Valley.
