Virginia L
Salb
October 28, 1945 – November 16, 2021
Virginia Lee Salb, 76, of Marshall, IL died peacefully, in the company of her son, November 16, 2021, at the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care in Terre Haute, Indiana. Virginia is survived by her brother, Karl Salb, her son Ben Hockett, his wife Erica, and grandchildren Bo, Daisy and Archie.
Virginia was born at City Hospital in Indianapolis on 28th of October 1945 to Dr. Robert and Mildred Salb (Clark), surgeon and nurse at City Hospital. When Virginia was very young, Dr. Salb moved the family to become the town doctor in Crossett, AR (see 2016 documentary Company Town). Virginia's contributions to the family profession were in the field of public health, becoming a nurse after college, then completing a Master's of Public Health. Her career took her from the Boone County (AR) Department of Health, to the Denis Developmental Center in Little Rock, AR, on to the Arlington County (VA) Department of Health and eventually to Westat in Rockville, MD, as she her work progressed from local to national focus. She spent her last 20 years traveling the world to see her son and his family, making jewelry, but mostly enjoying the beauty and peace of rural life off the grid between West Terre Haute, IN and Marshall, IL.
She inspired many around her, professionally but more so personally, by being herself, and encouraging us to do the same. We will miss her dearly.
Per Virginia's wishes she has been cremated. A memorial service will be held for Virginia at 1pm on 11th December 2021 at First Congregational of Terre Haute.
