Obituary

William Joseph Avery, lovingly known to everyone as “Poppy,” was born on September 1, 1940, and passed away on April 29, 2026. He was a man whose life was defined by quiet strength, unwavering love, and a deep commitment to his family. Poppy did not seek recognition, yet his impact was felt in the lives of everyone who knew him. Through both life’s joys and hardships, he remained steady and someone his family could always count on.

Poppy proudly served his country with honor and dedication for over ten years in the Army National Guard, a reflection of his strong sense of duty and commitment to others.

Poppy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Geraldine Avery, whose love and partnership were a cornerstone of his life. Together, they built a family rooted in resilience, care, and enduring connection.

Poppy leaves behind a legacy carried on by his children: William Joseph Avery II, Howard Avery, and Joni Robbins. He was also a cherished father-in-law to Robbin Avery and Dawn Avery, who were part of the family he loved so deeply.

He is survived by his brothers, Dean Avery and Dale Avery, who shared in a lifetime of memories and family bonds.

Poppy’s memory will live on through his grandchildren: Brian Branam, Grover Scott III, Dustin Avery, Ariana Avery, Elijah Avery, Brittany Farley, Taylor Hopkins, and Joni Neece. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren who will continue to carry forward the strength and spirit he instilled in his family.

A military honors ceremony will be held at a later date to recognize Poppy’s years of dedicated service in the Army National Guard.

Funeral services will be officiated by Pastor Taylor.

To those closest to him, Poppy was more than a father, grandfather, brother, and veteran he was a steady presence, a source of wisdom, and a reminder of what it means to love unconditionally. His life was reflected in the quiet moments, the shared laughter, and the bonds that remain unbroken even in his absence.

Though Poppy is no longer with us, the love he gave so freely will continue to guide and comfort his family. His life mattered deeply, and he will be missed beyond measure.
