Edward Anthony Mottel, 71, of Terre Haute passed away after an extended battle with lung cancer on August 8, 2020. Ed leaves behind his wife of 38 years Nancy (Evanik), sister Marsha Grade (Hans), and nephews Maxwell and Noah Grade.
Ed was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 11, 1948 to Edward and Irene Mottel and raised in Cicero, Illinois. He graduated from Fenwick High School, earned a bachelors degree in chemistry from the College of St. Thomas in 1970, and a PhD in chemistry from the University of Iowa in 1976. Ed spent two years as a researcher at the Illinois Institute of Technology before becoming a visiting professor at the University of Illinois. In 1980 Ed joined the chemistry faculty at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology retiring as a full professor in 2019.
Ed was involved in many professional and campus activities. These included being a 50 plus year member of the American Chemical Society where he most recently serviced as the Wabash Valley Chapter Councilor. Ed was a longtime advisor to the Rose chapter of the Triangle Fraternity, lifetime member of the AXE Fraternity, an annual contributor to the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers Inc. conferences, and a loyal member of the National Science Teachers Association. Ed also served on the advisory board of the Vigo County Credit Union.
A devout Catholic, Edward was a current member of the St. Joseph University Parish. Due to covid-19 restrictions no funeral is being held at this time.
