Geneva Ann (Walden) McGee Obituary

Geneva Ann Walden McGee, 98, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. She was born on November 20, 1927, in Terre Haute to Ulysses Augustus Walden and Grace Wilcox Walden Moore.

She grew up in the Highland Community attending Highland School and Gerstmeyer High School. Geneva performed in high school plays. She loved to dance and had the gift of song and she loved to sing-so she did! Everyday, all the time, everywhere, she sang. Whether in church choirs, sitting in the pews, cooking in her kitchen, or sitting on her front porch-she loved music and song-especially praise music unto the Lord. Once during a post-surgery rehab stay, facility nurses and techs commented on how much she brightened the place with her singing. She learned to navigate her new walker, singing with each step as she headed to therapy or the cafeteria. They heard her uplifting songs long before she came into view.

Geneva had a very selfless, encompassing love for her husband of 35 years, children, grandchildren, family and friends that extended to those who knew her. It did not matter -her love, her Christian love knew no bounds. She once told her then little grandson, “Nana’s heart always has room to love one more” when he displayed a tinge of jealousy towards her affection for his little cousins.

By the age of three, she was singing “Bringing in the Sheaves” at her grandmother’s church, complete with hand and arm gestures. As a little girl she attended True Gospel Tabernacle with her mother. By her mid-teens she was in regular attendance at Highland Missionary Baptist Church. It was there that she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized in “The Creek”. In addition to her ministry in music- she humbly served over the years as Sunday School superintendent, Sunday School Secretary, Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Treasurer, in the Kitchen Ministry, on the Mother’s Board, and chaired numerous annual and special programs and events. Geneva joyfully sang in the Highland’s Choir along with the District Choir and accepted requests for weddings and numerous Homegoing services. Geneva could never do too much. Her response was always “yes” when it was in service for the Lord. For 85 years Highland was HOME. She remained a faithful member, returning whenever possible until she left this place for her HOME in Glory!

Geneva wed her ONE true love, John Lester McGee. To this union, five children were born: John, Terrance, Michael, Joyce, and Robin.

She was a domestic housekeeper for several families who cherished and loved her as their own, as she did them. She remained closely connected to them for more than 70 years.

She read excessively, loved to bowl and to sew. After the death of her husband, she took sewing classes to enhance her skills. She created elaborate holiday costumes for her grandchildren, prom dresses, and even began to upholster furniture. She never accepted money for this work.

Geneva was preceded in death by her parents, husband John Lester McGee, brother Ulysses “Ish” Walden, sister Rosemary Scott Walden, and Daughter in Love Dorothy Marie McGee.

She leaves a wonderful legacy of love and memories to be cherished by her loving children, John A. McGee, Sr., Terrance McGee, Michael McGee, Joyce McGee-Gardner, and Robin McGee (Patricia), grandchildren: Tony Lamont McGee, John A. McGee, Jr., Kisa McGee, Lester McGee, April Daniels, Quinton Daniels, Kellen McGee, Christian Gardner, Bernie McGee, Eric McGee, and Destiny McGee, several great-grandchildren, Daughters in Love: Donita Wills McGee and Terri Natt Shelton, Sister in Love Deloris Render, Brother in Love Kenneth McGee (Lonnie), dear friend Evelyn Carson, nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.
