Jimmy "Barney" Ernest Barnett, 72, passed away on March 25, 2025 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute after battling cancer and pneumonia; he remained a lifelong resident of New Goshen, the community he loved. Jimmy was born on September 23, 1952 in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Jimmy was a hardworking man who dedicated his life to providing for his family and those around him. Over the years, he worked at several companies, including Chesty Potato Chips and Great Dane Trailers in Terre Haute. His longest tenure was with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company, where he held various positions—from working on the bottling line to being a route driver, handling the cooler department, and serving as a diesel mechanic. He also spent time at R&R Discount and was well known at the Terre Haute Auction Barn. If you ever heard a loud "Yep!" echoing through the auction house, that was Jimmy—his presence was unmistakable.
Beyond his work ethic, Jimmy had a passion for anything with a motor and wheels. He loved working on cars and trucks and could often be found under the hood of a vehicle, fixing or tinkering with something. He also enjoyed cookouts and spending time outdoors with family and friends. Whether it was grilling up a meal or embarking on an adventure to find the best sales at local stores, Jimmy found joy in life's simple pleasures.
Jimmy's heart was as big as his personality. He was known for his kindness and generosity—always ensuring that others were taken care of, even if it meant going without himself. He never met a stranger and had an uncanny ability to make people feel welcome. His stubbornness and sarcasm were part of his charm; he was a prankster at heart but carried himself with an undeniable warmth that endeared him to many.
He is survived by his loving wife, Tina Barnett; daughters Jennifer Bruner (Butch) and Rebecca Nicoson; son Jimmy Barnett Jr. (Ashley); grandchildren Ashley Rock (Jared), Nathan Nicoson (Billie), Aerial Wilson (Steve), Alyssa Rudisel (Levi), Abby Nicoson (Jarrett), and Anthony "AJ" Lewis; as well as an eagerly awaited grandbaby due in November. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren Axel Nicoson and Emily Rudisel, along with three more great-grandbabies expected in April, May, and August.
Jimmy is also survived by his sisters Margaret Atkinson, Rita Apfel (Dave), Violet Hill (Van), and Mary Kay Rednour; brothers Sam Barnett Jr., Frank Dunkley, and Jack Adams; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members who will miss him dearly. Mother and Father-in-law Rita and Tom Wright, Brother-in-law, Scotty Haymaker, and Sister-In-law Lisa Haymaker.
He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Catherine Barnett; Virginia and Francis Dunkley; siblings Andy Barnett, Liz Delph, Bill Dunkley, and Darlene Eldridge; niece Violet (Jones) Hunter; Father-in-Law George Haymaker; and son-in-law David Nicoson.
A private celebration of life will be held by his family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to assist with services and to support his wife during this difficult time.
Jimmy's memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His unwavering dedication to family, his hardworking spirit, and his ability to bring laughter into any room will never be forgotten.
