John Everett Akers Jr. Obituary

John passed away peacefully after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease. John was born July 26, 1943 to John E Akers Sr. and Frances (Donham) Akers. He had 5 siblings: sisters Kay, Pearl, and Linda, and brothers Foster and Stanley.

After high school, he went and served his country in the army. Upon returning from service he joined the bricklayers and allied craftsman. He worked as a bricklayer for over 40 years. He married the love of his life, Peggy Jane Hunt, on August 15, 1964. They had 3 sons that were their world: John (Kim), Jeff (Lisa), Jim (Avalee). They were blessed with 7 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy, both parents, his in-laws, Forrest and Mary Hunt, brother Stanley, and great-granddaughter Ainsley.
He got the opportunity to work for the American Fishing Institute at ISU. Later, he worked for the City of Terre Haute, in the building inspection office. He was a member of the Masons.

John was a wonderful man who never met a stranger. His love for the great outdoors led him to running several different Bass fishing tournament circuits, which led to a lot of lifelong friendships.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the wonderful care he received from Tracey's girls, Sarah, Amanda, Julie and Taylor, along with many others that came to help.
We would also like to thank Hospice/VNA of the Wabash Valley for their wonderful care!!

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choice.

There will be a celebration of his life on March 7th, 2026 from 2pm-5pm at the Hope Community Center in Prairieton, Indiana.
