Jonni Hayes Obituary

After a short illness, Jonni Sue Hayes passed away on July 12, 2021 in Terre Haute Union Hospice Unit in Indiana. Jonni Maxey was born in Mattoon, Illinois on February 10, 1956 to John and Helen Fitzpatrick Maxey. She was raised by her mother and step father, Helen and Doc Edwards. Jonni’s marriage to Pete Terrell brought 3 children into this world. They are Tammy Craig of Terre Haute; Tommy Terrell; and Tara Terrell of Terre Haute. She is survived by 8 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and very large extended family. Jonni is also survived by 2 brothers and 4 sisters. They are William (Karen) Jackson, Cheryl York, Kathy (Rick) Garrett, Donna Edwards, Rae Hille, and Aaron (Kelly) Edwards. Jonni loved to travel and lived in several states. She proudly served in the U.S. Army. She had many hobbies. She was an accomplished cook, seamstress, artist, photographer, gardener, reader and crafter. She never lost her thirst of knowledge and loved researching and finding answers. She had many projects. The latest was her raised garden beds for her vegetables. Making them in typical “Jonni Style” by researching, finding practical and economical ways to construct the containers. She called this her lab experiment and was waiting for the results of all of her hard work. Jonni was preceded in death by her mother and step father, Helen and Doc Edwards; brother Donald Eric; her son, Tommy Terrell; husband Bill Swango. Jonni will be remembered by her big infectious and mischievous laugh and spirit. Recently, Jonni moved to a cabin on the Wabash river, next door to her sister and best friend, Cheryl. Here she found peace and contentment, watching the wild life and the activities of the river. Her favorite thrill was seeing the bald eagles soar and fly above her place every day. As per her wishes, Jonni’s earthly body will be cremated and there will be no memorial services
