Maurice Dean Miller, 77, passed away on October 23, 2023. He was born on April 2, 1946 in Terre Haute to Richard Miller and Violet (Rhodes) Miller. Maurice married Naomi (Evans) Miller on August 9, 1968, and they have been inseparable ever since.
You could find his picture in the dictionary under the definition "Elder Statesman". He worked as a professor at Indiana State University for over 30 years in the field of both Special and Gifted education. He mentored teachers and was a mediator between parents of students with special needs and School Districts. He was also a docent for the Swope Art Museum for many years and especially loved teaching school children about the art that they were looking at.
He loved Theology and studying the Bible. An avid poet, He loved the book of Psalms so much that he wrote meditations about each of the Psalms and published a book called "Psalm Songs".
He was a great musician and actor as well. He loved the chance to sing Tenor in the Hallelujah Chorus, played the handbells in a group that went to Russia, and played a Judge in a local production of The Laramie Project.
He is survived by his wife of over 55 years, daughter Jenny Miller (Gregg Osterhout), sister Joyce Vanest (Bud), and grandchildren Isreal “Luna” Miller, Zachary Miller Jr., and Duncan Osterhout.
He is preceded in death by both of his parents, son Zachary Miller, daughter Beth Ann Miller, and brother Gary Miller.
A memorial Service will be held Monday November 20, 2023 at 10:30 am in Memorial United Methodist Church, 2701 Poplar St.. Terre Haute, IN 47803 with Pastor Ron Branson officiating.
