Roy Thompson Obituary

Roy G. Thompson, 94, of Terre Haute, passed away October 21, 2020.  He was born May 25, 1926, in Dana, IN, to Dwight K. and Millie Thompson.  After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII Roy returned to Dana and married Marion A. Haase.

Roy taught at various public schools in Indiana and Illinois and retired from Sarah Scott Middle School having taught there 30+ years.  He greatly enjoyed seeing several former students in his retirement.   Roy and Marion were Golden Age members of the First Baptist Church of Terre Haute.  Roy’s vocabulary, gift of music, sense of humor and unpretentious nature will be greatly missed.  Had Roy written this obituary it likely would be in the form of a satirical poem of his life.

Roy was preceded in death by wife Marion, his parents, sister Saralu Thomas and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.  He is survived by wife Berdena of Pensacola, FL, daughters Vicki (Robert) Dougherty of Casey, IL, Elaine (Robert) Grove of Kansas CIty, MO, and son Tom (JoEllen) Thompson of Monrovia, IN, and special sister-in-law Minnie Haase.  Also surviving are grandchildren Shannon (Aaron) Justice, Rob (Sarah) Dougherty, Tara Grove, Jared (Crystal) Dougherty, Justin (Abby) Thompson, Tess (Brad) Lemish and Lindsey (Bret) Holbrook as well as thirteen great-grandchildren.

Due to COVID precautions a private graveside service will be conducted by Rev. Bernie Jackson.  The family would like to thank all those who “checked in” on Roy in recent years including several nieces and nephews, his coffee buddies, former teachers and his First Baptist family.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests, if desired, donations be made to the Terre Haute First Baptist Church or the Light House Mission.  Samaritan Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.  Online condolences may be made to www.samaritanfunerals.com.
