Sandra K. (Jackson) Phipps Obituary

Sandra Kay Phipps was born in Bloomington on Nov. 2, 1945. She married young and moved to Greencastle, where she lived most of her life surrounded by love, laughter, music, literature and many dogs.


She acquired bachelor’s and master’s degrees from DePauw University. She taught English at Cloverdale High School for 36 years. For the past two and half years, Sandra resided at Villas of Holly Brook in Brazil, where she passed away on Nov. 6 with family present.


Sandra was a loving wife and mother as well as a devoted teacher, who considered her profession a true calling.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank Alexander Jackson and Sylvia Louise (Harden) Jackson, brother Frank Jackson Jr., mother-in-law Estella Florence (Cole) Phipps, and husband of nearly 50 years James William Phipps.


She is survived by two daughters, Julia Salting (Don) and Audrie Grimes (ex-husband Shane); two granddaughters, Emma Grimes (fiance Jacob Patton) and Anna Grimes; and Teddy, her beloved beagle. In addition to friends and family, there are countless students who will continue to cherish the impact she made in their lives.


There will be a celebration of life at the Inn at DePauw on Seminary Street in Greencastle on Nov. 14 from 4 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers please consider making a contribution either to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Dollars for Scholars of Putnam County Indiana.
