William Sawyers, Jr. Obituary

William David Sawyers, Jr. 82 of Terre Haute, IN., passed away peacefully in his sleep April 17, 2024 after recovering from a fall that necessitated several surgeries. He was born June 19, 1941 to Thelma Ercell Odom and William David Sawyers Sr. of Terre Haute. 

Bill is survived by his wife of 61 years, Donna Kay Johnson Sawyers, two sons Mark Alan (Patti Williams) Sawyers of Plant City Florida and Bradley Egan (Jennifer Kirk) Sawyers of Terre Haute.  Grandchildren Grant William, Erica Nicole, and Alesa Rahe Sawyers of Fort Wayne In., Daniel Paul Wasilewski Sawyers of Hobart, In., and Ryan Bradley Sawyers of Peoria, Il. 

Cousins Karen (Jim) Redicks of Terre Haute and children Gretchen and Stephen, Debbie Larson of Sarasota, Fl. and children Megan and Sara.  Brother-in-law, Ranson Johnson (Ann Smithson) of  Smithville, TN, and his son Scott of Springville, IN.  Sister-in-law Patricia Sawyers of Merced CA and children Jennifer and Michael also of California.  Cousins John C Sawyers of Plainfield and Janice Elaine Sawyers Fellows of Terre Haute.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Stephen Sawyers, and a special aunt, Juanita Quinlan Adams of Sarasota, FL.

Bill was a 1959 graduate of Glenn High School,  attended Indiana State University and a graduate of the National School of Real Estate Finance and held an Indiana brokers license. He was Airman lC, military police of the l8lst combat support squadron—US Air Force from 1959 to 1965 and was activated during the Berlin crisis in 1961/1962.  Bill spent his entire career in the banking field starting at Commercial Credit, then joining Merchants National Bank, now Old National Bank and retiring from ONB after 33 years of service. He was Vice President serving in the capacity of Compliance/CRA, commercial and mortgage loan lending officer during his tenure.   He was past member of Elks Lodge BPOE 86 serving in many capacities, President and member of the Kiwanis Club of Terre Haute, and for many years served as President and board member of Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club.

During retirement he and Donna developed a small subdivision, built and designed their dream home, traveled to many countries, took several cruises with friends, boated on lake Michigan with family, trailer camped with family and friends at many locations but primarily Lake Barclay.  He enjoyed cooking, his specialty being homemade French bread.   He appreciated and loved spending time with his family and many life-long friends acquired through his banking career.  He and Donna also looked forward to their yearly winter vacation stays at Gulf Shores, AL., their vacation spot their entire marriage.

Honoring Bill's wishes, cremation was chosen with private memorial services.  If desired, donations may be made in his honor to a charity of your choice or to the Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club.
